The Superintendent of Night Operations will assist the Chief of Night Operations during night and overnight hours ensuring the safe, reliable, cost-efficient execution of both revenue operations and of maintenance activities ensuring the availability of staff, vehicles, and infrastructure upon the start of service each morning.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist the Chief of Night Operations by coordinating and managing all revenue service and maintenance activities during night and overnight hours.
  • Receive updates from the field throughout the night and overnight, provide updates to the Chief of Night Ops and take any remedial action necessary to ensure the safe and timely start of service each day.
  • Assist in the implementation of medium and long-term tactical and strategic plans for the efficient use of night hours in order to improve everyday service and minimize the impact to service.
  • Ensure proper vehicle maintenance activities are carried out on revenue and non-revenue fleets to satisfy start of service operating requirements and assure long-term integrity.
  • Ensure work crews enter and leave the right of way in a safe and timely fashion to ensure the timely start of service.
  • Ensure maintenance goals and milestones, both vehicle and infrastructure, are met on a nightly basis to ensure the immediate safety and long-term integrity of the system.
  • Notify the Chief of Night Ops and the appropriate department heads of any unusual occurrence that may impact the start of service.
  • Assist in directing the Authority's response to extraordinary situations, including emergencies, derailments, accidents, serious service delays, severe weather conditions, special events, etc., assuming responsibility for the safety of passengers, employees, and property.
  • Directs programs to improve the quality of transit service (e.g., system appearance and cleanliness, public announcements, treatment of employees/passengers) and improve MBTA efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Remain current with the MBTA's Safety Plan as well as the position's outlined responsibilities. Manage MBTA contract/agreements with private carriers or subcontractors who provide transit and other services at night.
  • Assist in administering collective bargaining agreements to maintain effective labor relations and meets with Union representatives to resolve grievances involving both individual cases and general issues.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Respond, either directly or through others, to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
  • Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment and Anti-Retaliation policies; and perform related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Supervision
  • Will work overnight and provide direct and indirect supervision of all night staff to ensure the safety of work being completed and the start of service each morning.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience and Required Skills
  • Six (6) years of experience in transportation or transportation management of public transportation systems.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role directly managing transportation services and/or managing vehicle or infrastructure maintenance activities.
  • Ability to work with all levels of an organization to provide solutions to critical issues. Experience working with outside contractors, regulatory agencies, community organizations and others on technical and sensitive matters.
  • The individual in this role must have strong self-management skills as well as effective organizational, analytical, multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Detail orientation with the ability to analyze, problem-solve, organize, and manage multiple priorities and excellent follow-up skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to diagnose problems, identify and drive appropriate solutions.
  • The ability to use Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint. PeopleSoft is preferred.
  • The ability to pass background screenings and the MBTA's drug and alcohol screening. The ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, presentation and conflict resolution skills. The ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.

  • Candidate must have a valid driver’s license.

Substitutions Include

A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • An Associate’s degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • A Master’s degree in a related subject substitute for two (2) years of general experience.
