Major Gifts Officer
Reports to: Manager of Major Gifts
Department: Development
Job level: Non-Management
Salary: $58,500 – $78,799 per year

In your role as the Major Gifts Officer, you are more than just a leader in fundraising; you are an important member of a highly respected community of caring people in Ottawa who are committed to ending homelessness.
You play a key role in strategically building the major gift development effort to meet and exceed our ambitious fundraising goals, including a goal of $1.8M in major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
Reporting to, and working closely with the Manager of Major Gifts, you work with other staff members, the leadership team and community volunteers to initiate, plan and manage major gift donor research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as primary relationship manager to a portfolio of 100-125 individual donors and prospects with a capacity to make gifts of $5k and more
- Achieve targets on annual revenue goals and fundraising plans
- Actively manage assigned portfolio with a high expectation of face-to-face visits to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward and provide ongoing relationship management to donors
- Work collaboratively on the research and identification of new prospects
- Develop donor strategies and personalized cultivation plans designed to engage and inspire new and existing donors toward meaningful and impactful gift commitments
- Connect with donors on a regular basis to share news, updates, impact reports, invitations and to provide customized correspondence and experiences
- Develop and deliver high quality, highly customized proposals, briefing documents and/or presentations to secure major gifts
- Develop and deliver prompt, personal and meaningful gift acknowledgement and ensure appropriate donor recognition and stewardship activities are implemented
- Participate in events and functions related to major giving
- Provide input into the development of the major gifts business plan and budget
- Create and monitor personal work plan and the monthly review process of progress against plan, and suggest modifications when necessary in order to meet personal targets
- Meticulously employ the CRM database (Raiser’s Edge) for tracking and cultivating donors and prospects and contribute to the organization’s major gifts tracking and activity reporting
- Pro-actively model a donor-centered approach and help to advance a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization
REQUIREMENTS
Education
- University Degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Experience
- A minimum of 3–5 years’ progressive experience in fundraising with a proven track record of pipeline management, face to face solicitation, grant writing, closing gifts
Qualifications
- Creative, flexible and organized professional with demonstrated team-based fundraising success
- Outstanding written communication skills and demonstrated success at persuasive writing
- Self-starter with the ability to think strategically, work independently, and manage competing priorities in a high-volume and results oriented environment
- Outstanding relationship builder and networker
- Ability to passionately articulate key messages and demonstrate a deep understanding of The Ottawa Mission and the issues surrounding homelessness in our community
- Be a positive influence throughout the organization, fostering a commitment to teamwork and building a climate of philanthropy, professionalism, openness and communication
- Excellent organization, planning and time management skills
- Exacting attention to detail
- Experience using Raiser’s Edge CRM software an asset
- Advanced level of proficiency in MS Office applications
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
- A commitment to the values and vision of The Ottawa Mission
- Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean abstract
- Bilingualism (English/French) considered an asset
Working Conditions
- Must work to, sometimes strident, deadlines, and respond to competing priorities
- Travelling by car throughout the city
- Hybrid work model 2-3 days per week in office
- Interacts with employees, donors
- Intermittent physical activity including and the community at large walking, standing, sitting, and lifting
- Primarily Office Setting
