Job Description

The Bixby LibraryChildren's Library Associate welcomes customers and ensures that all have an extraordinary experience that supports their needs while educating, training, suggesting, and answering technology, mobile device, e-reader, reference and readers’ advisory questions; proactively connects customers with services and assists customers in the discovery of all services TCCL offers, including with on-call professional staff in the branch and system-wide; provides reference assistance and readers’ advisory services for children, their caregivers and educators; assists with physical maintenance of the children's collection; develops and implements children's programs; looks for ways to improve workflow and anticipate customer needs and trends.
Location: 20 E. Breckenridge Bixby, OK.74008
Salary: $18.24/hr.
Part Time 20 hr/week Schedule:
Monday 10am - 6pm
Tuesday 1pm - 8pm
Wednesday 10am - 6pm
One Saturday per month rotating off Wednesday
Occasional Sunday's at a Regional branch

Essential Functions:
  • Prepares and presents weekly Build a Reader story times;
  • Prepares and presents programs for children;
  • Performs periodic school visits throughout the year;
  • Helps develop and maintain the children’s collection at this library;
  • Conducts community outreach, which may include services to schools, day care facilities, and community organizations;
  • Communicates effectively, trains customers, and resolves problems at the point of need in the use and application of all of the library’s self-service features including self-check, on-line account management, pay stations, the online catalog, online resource guides, and instructional videos;
  • Rotates throughout zones, helping customers including at the service point desk, providing instructional training and problem solving at the point of need;
  • Trains and educates library customers on new and existing self-service technology and devices (including e-readers, smart phones and mobile devices); assists with troubleshooting customer self-service tools and technology issues;
  • Ensures that customers successfully use reference and readers’ advisory services; provides one-on-one coaching and assistance as needed;
  • Anticipates customer needs by providing and explaining the use of previously prepared “packets” (in a variety of modalities) of information and tools;
  • Assists and trains library customers in utilizing self-service features for selecting and locating library materials, conducting research, and discovering reference information for regular or specialized collections;
  • Registers and issues library cards, checks materials in and out at the point of need, and routes returned materials to proper locations;
  • Searches, locates or places reserves on requested materials, notifying customers when materials are available;
  • Maintains and operates AV equipment, computers, office machines, and other library hardware and software;
  • Prepares displays to augment children’s services and to promote the collection and programs;
  • Complies with Process Activated Training System (PATS) scripts when performing job tasks and making additional contributions to the PATS scripts as necessary to continually ensure all tasks are being performed consistently and with the best practices;
  • May serve as Person in Charge of the location as needed; directing tasks of Customer Service Assistants, Shelvers and volunteers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors' degree required.
  • No previous experience required; library, retail, or customer service experience preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work occasionally requires stooping and bending. Occasional light lifting such as three or four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 20 pounds) may be required.

There are usually no major sources of discomfort; work is essentially conducted in a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditions.
