As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector. We protect Alberta’s forests from wildfire and preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.


Role Responsibilities

Do you have strong project management skills, excellent time management and an aptitude or interest in legal process and forestry policy? Forestry Division is looking for a litigation and project coordinator to take on the complex and critical task of overseeing the coordination and response to several litigation actions. This time-sensitive work requires commitment and engagement to help address the challenges of working on a multi-use landscape.

As the Litigation and Program coordinator you will be reporting to the Director of Wildfire Mitigation and will act as the one window for communications into and out of Forestry Division as well the point of contact for all divisional staff when working on a litigation file. Your position is critical for the Forestry Division to provide accurate and timely responses to internal and external legal counsel and to gather and organize all contributions of staff to the files. If you were to be the successful candidate as Litigation and Program coordinator you will provide division executive with up-to-date information on process and timelines of each file and with potential implications for Forestry Division policy and operations.

In times of minimal litigation needs (timelines of current files, closing of files, etc.) you will support the Executive Director, Forest Management and Wildfire Mitigation, with coordination of other projects and strategies such as forest management plans, wildfire mitigation plans, climate change strategy, tree improvement strategy and others as needed.


As the Litigation and program coordinator your responsibilities are, but not limited to:

  • Acts as the single point of contact for all Forestry Division civil litigation files.
  • Coordinates and provides Forestry Division responses to litigation requests.
  • Provides comprehensive organization and management of multiple large, complex and sensitive files in both paper and electronic formats for litigation and other planning and strategic projects.
  • Provide information and advice to division executive, program areas, and team members with respect to the division's litigation files and other projects as needed.
  • Support the Executive Director, Forest Management and Wildfire Mitigation, and senior branch representatives in achieving the mandate and goals of Forestry.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in public administration, science, forestry, land use planning, indigenous relations or political science plus 4 years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent as described below.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education


Requirements:
  • Project management experience.

Assets
  • Knowledge of forestry is a key asset.
  • Strong professional judgment and decision-making skills to deal with confidential and sensitive information and the ability to recognize implications of emerging issues and develop recommendations for options and responses.
  • Exceptional writing and communication abilities.

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity located in Edmonton. This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15AM - 4:30PM, 36.25 hours a week.
