This role includes a base salary and commission salary. Base salary of $1,000.00 plus monthly sales commissions.

Job Summary:

The General Sales Manager ensures that the dealership meets its new and used car and truck unit sales quotas and its gross objectives on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. This role will accomplish these objectives through planning, organizing, coordinating, and measuring the activities of the New and Used Vehicle Departments, The Financial Department and Commercial Sales.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make a monthly projection of the vehicle requirements by department for the immediate 90-day sales period.
  • Determine monthly and yearly forecasts in terms of unit sales, gross profit objectives and departmental profits.
  • Forecast monthly with each salesperson to establish objectives in terms of the number and type of customers coming into the dealership, closing percentages in each category, time utilization, prospecting efforts, unit sales and projected income.
  • Recommend to the Dealer/General Manager procedures for short- and long-range advertising, sales promotions, staffing needs, lease promotions, compensation plans, customer complaints, salesperson evaluations and car rentals.
  • Prepare a Plan for the Week to submit to the Dealer/General Manager.
  • Meet with each salesperson as early as possible every day to review yesterday’s results and today’s plan of action.
  • Conduct sales meetings.
  • Facilitate new vehicle pre-delivery with the Service Manager.
  • Provide on-the-job training for salespeople.
  • Ensure that salespeople are following the established prospecting program to obtain optimum results.
  • Write and review monthly commission sheets, productivity reports, Sales Consultants’ monthly forecasts and profit performance with Dealer/General Manager by salesperson and as a department.
  • Maintain a balanced vehicle inventory and establish a program for moving new cars in inventory over 120 days.
  • Maintain a balanced used car inventory and establish a program for moving used cars in inventory over 60 days.
  • Require that standards are maintained for displaying merchandising and maintaining new and used vehicles.
  • Ensure new and used vehicle salespeople maintain a 100% turnover for the Financial Manager.
  • Check the condition and mileage of all demonstrators monthly.
  • Maintain CSI in top 10% of group.
  • It is your responsibility to support and endorse dealership policies and procedures as set forth by Dealership Management and Manufacturers’ standards.


Required Experience and Education:


  • High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED) required; Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university preferred.
  • One year’s dealership experience required.


Additional Requirements:

  • Valid New York State Driver License.

Equipment, Machines and Software Used:

  • Computer software: Microsoft Office to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and CDK.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel, push, pull, reach, crouch, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists.
  • Will stand and move throughout the dealership facility (lot, showroom, service department, offices) for most of the shift. Will spend time outdoors showing vehicles to prospective customers and to drive vehicles in traffic during test drives

Physical Exertion:

  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Light exertion can involve sitting, walking and/or standing most of the time.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a dealership setting (lot, showroom, service department and offices).
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours are required.

Hazards and Safety Precautions:

  • Hazards: Slips, trips and falls, ergonomic injuries, and occasional lifting.
  • Safety Precautions:Breaks are encouraged to allow for stretching and training is provided covering slips, trips, and falls, safe lifting and stretching techniques.
